it’s a 2004 game, looks pretty great for one, be happy with that and just enjoy it.For long-time Garry's Mod player Michael "Vioxtar" Efraim, it can take 116 (individually posed!) ragdolls, 329 effects, 679 props, and about seven months of work. it’s lacking a lot of things that we pretty much take for granted in modern games (global dynamic shadows instead of static prebaked ones?) and you’ll have to stick around and hope a source 2 port/remake actually happens if you want it to look nicer. Outside that, there’s no way to improve the way gmod looks. it definitely looks processed, but imo overprocessed looks pretty dogshit. only garble up the image with gobs of post processing, washing it out and making it look bad. Overuse of bloom, toy town, sharpening, etc. ambient occlusion isn’t applied to objects in mirrors, though (look at the lights below for reference) and it’ll render straight through anything transparent (like smoke/fog, where it looks especially jarring) it’s not perfect and has a handful of bugs, but it can add depth to a lot of scenes and make some pretty cool improvements. If you have a nvidia card you can/could (i can’t anymore, now my garrys mod registers as a half life source application instead of a half life 2 application according to the nvidia control panel, and you can’t inject ambient occlusion to a half life source application) use the control panel to touch up your game with ambient occlusion. (performance is usually a drag on these maps tho, “gmod_mcore_test 1” highly recommended) there’s plenty of maps that make great use of textures on their own, though, that look much better than the usual suspects. i put the cinematic mod textures in gmod once, but it quadrupled my load times, caused terrible hitching when moving between locations in larger maps, and caused a lot of weird looking textures in weird places.

The only way you can really improve visuals in gmod is by replacing models and textures or injecting something like ambient occlusion.
